| Welcome to
Chumphon! |
The lively provincial center Chumphon (also:
Chumporn, spoken: Choom-pohn) is situated 468 km to the south of Bangkok,
7 km from the Gulf of Siam. The name derives from chumnumphon which
means "amicable meeting place". Thais know Chumphon as the "gateway to the
south".
Coming from Bangkok the 4-lane Petchkasem Highway and the trains pass
the cities of Phetchaburi, Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Bang Saphan.
They continue to Surat Thani and further south. Another highway crosses the
Isthmus of Kra to Ranong in the west. To the east the Gulf of Siam skirts
the province, with the travellers' island of Ko Tao in the distance.
The province is subject to the southwest monsoon from May to October.
However, it is also influenced by the northeast monsoon from November
to February. This results in the second-highest rainfall of Thailand in the
Tenasserim Mountains. Although it rains far less in the plains, the town
was flooded in the rainy season (especially from August to September) several
times by the floods rushing down the mountains.
In the foothills many plantations were established within the past
20 years: coffee, fruits and palm oil.
The town itself offers no important points of interest beside
the fantastic night food market in Krom Luang Chumphon Road.
Worth a visit is the National Museum. The local culture is depicted
in lively scenes, e. g. with a film about shadow play. You may be interested
in buying some local souvenirs and handicrafts (clothes, figurines etc.).
Open Wed-Sun 9-16 hours, tickets 30 Baht. |

| Excursions around
Chumphon |
| The environment of Chumphon is underdevelopped
for tourism and it has never known mass tourism at all. Nature lovers can
find spectacular beaches, islands with rocks and beautiful corals, untouched
jungle, caves and waterfalls.
To explore the splendid nature of Chumphon is best by motorcycle. Information
on sightseeing trips in the lovely countryside and to the stalactite caves
can be found in many guesthouses. Even if you'll plan an organised trip (if
it's not the standard version for local tourists) there are many places to
discover. If you are interested in temples it's worthwhile to visit Wat
Tham Khwan Muang (the marble temple), Wat Tham Nam Lot and the
Big Buddha. |
